The (pronounced) change in position and sometimes intensity of an electronic absorption
or emission band, accompanying a change in the
polarity of the medium. Negative (positive) solvatochromism corresponds to a
hypsochromic
(
bathochromic)
shift with increasing solvent
polarity.
