Addition of small amounts of
hydrophiliccolloid to a hydrophobic
sol may make the latter more sensitive to
flocculation by electrolyte. Higher concentrations of the same
hydrophiliccolloid usually protect the hydrophobic
sol from
flocculation. This phenomenon is called protective action.
