An electronic transition described approximately as
promotion of an electron from a '
non-bonding' (lone-pair) n orbital to an '
antibonding '
σ orbital designated as
σ*.
Such transitions generally involve high transition energies and appear close to or
mixed with
Rydberg transitions.
